The Merino sheep breed was developed in Spain in the medieval period, but derives from a North African breed. Different strains of Merino sheep can now be found throughout the world, including the United States.

Merino sheep are exalted for their extremely soft wool that is even appropriate for newborn babies. Many people with wool sensitivity can wear Merino wool garments. Merino sheep have a short wool staple length (2-4”) and low luster. The short staple length can make it susceptible to abrasion and pilling. Adding silk to Merino wool increases its durability and shine.
